30 DAY SONG CHALLENGE: Your favourite song

The Jealous Sound - “Abandon! Abandon!”

I first heard this song at a gig in early 2009, when Brisbane band An Horse covered it. I think their cover is a little bit sucky but it made me check out the original, which I adore and keep coming back to.

The Jealous Sound’s album Killing With Kindness was the soundtrack of my time in hospital last year. I’d lie in bed listening to it with headphones so I couldn’t hear the intermittent buzzing from the ECT treatment room across the hall. Apparently the band’s singer and primary songwriter Blair Sheehan has had his fair share of mental health issues, so I thought the whole thing was quite appropriate.

To me, this song is about coming out of a depression and the pure joy and relief that goes along with it.

Can you feel me now/I am stronger, I am no longer overcome/I’m overjoyed!

Lyrics.
